Perplexity AI Search Not Working — How to Fix It
Perplexity AI is designed to search the web in real time, but users sometimes see responses like 'I cannot access the internet' or receive answers with no cited sources. This usually happens when the search focus mode is misconfigured or a temporary session issue is blocking live web retrieval. Free and Pro users alike can encounter this problem, and it is almost always fixable in under a minute.
Why does this error happen?
How to fix it
Refresh the Page
A simple page refresh clears any transient session state that may be blocking the search pipeline. Press Ctrl+R (Windows) or Cmd+R (Mac), then resubmit your query. This resolves the issue in many cases caused by brief network or server hiccups.
Set Focus Mode to 'Web'
Click the Focus selector located just below the search bar and confirm it is set to 'Web' rather than 'Writing.' The Writing focus intentionally disables live internet retrieval and uses only the model's training data. Switching to Web mode re-enables real-time search and source citations immediately.
Try a Different Search Focus
If the Web focus still does not return live results, switch to an alternative focus such as Academic, Reddit, YouTube, or Wolfram Alpha. This helps isolate whether the issue is specific to the general Web index or affects all search channels. If alternative focuses work, the Web index may be experiencing a temporary outage on Perplexity's end.
Clear Browser Cache and Retry
Cached data can interfere with how Perplexity initializes its search session. Open your browser settings, clear cookies and cached files for perplexity.ai, then hard-reload the page with Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac). Sign back in if prompted and resubmit your query to confirm live search is restored.
Pro tip
Always glance at the Focus mode badge before submitting a query — it persists between sessions, so if you last used 'Writing' mode, your next session will start in the same mode and silently skip web search until you change it.
