Midjourney Remix Mode Not Working — How to Fix It
Midjourney's Remix mode allows you to modify your prompt when generating image variations, but many users find their changes are silently ignored when clicking Vary buttons. This issue typically affects users who have recently updated settings or toggled Remix mode without confirming it was properly saved. If your variation images look identical to the original despite prompt edits, Remix is likely inactive or misconfigured.
Why does this error happen?
How to fix it
Enable Remix via the /settings Command
Type /settings in any Discord channel where the Midjourney bot is active and press Enter. A settings panel will appear — locate the Remix Mode button and click it so it highlights or shows as enabled. Confirm the change is saved before proceeding to generate or vary any images.
Click Vary (Subtle) or Vary (Strong) After Enabling
With Remix mode now active, click either the Vary (Subtle) or Vary (Strong) button beneath an existing image grid. A prompt dialog box should appear, pre-filled with your original prompt text. If no dialog appears, Remix mode was not successfully enabled — return to /settings and verify its state.
Modify the Prompt Text Before Submitting
Inside the Remix prompt dialog, edit the pre-filled prompt to include your desired changes — add new subjects, styles, parameters, or keywords as needed. Do not submit without making at least one change, as an unedited prompt will produce results identical to a standard variation. Click Submit to send the modified prompt to Midjourney for processing.
Re-enable Remix If It Was Recently Toggled
If Remix was working earlier but has stopped responding, open /settings again and toggle Remix mode off, wait a few seconds, then toggle it back on. This forces the bot to re-register your preference for the current session. Restart your Discord client if the issue persists after re-toggling.
Pro tip
Before starting a creative session, always run /settings first and visually confirm Remix Mode is highlighted — treating it as a pre-flight checklist step prevents silent failures mid-workflow when you need prompt control most.
